A number of high-profile players failed to make the weekend at the Open de Espana in Madrid, and Patrick Reed could lose his top spot in the Race To Dubai standings after missing the cut at Real Club de Campo Villa de Madrid. With the DP World Tour season nearing its end, the field also includes places in the season-ending playoffs and a PGA Tour card for 2027.
Here are the big names who missed the cut.
Patrick Reed (+2)
Patrick Reed was looking to extend his lead over Rory McIlroy in the Race To Dubai with a strong finish, but missing the cut could cost him the top position. Spain’s Eugenio Chacarra, playing with a broken toe, is contending for his national open title. Only a victory will be enough for Chacarra to overtake Reed, but a second or third-place finish would be enough to move past McIlroy into second.
Reed is recovering from the injury that forced him out of the BMW PGA Championship, and it was another week without points for him. He improved on Friday with a level-par round of 71, but his opening 73 on Thursday cost him, and he missed the weekend by one stroke.
Justin Rose (+2)
Justin Rose finished T18 at the Tour Championship on the PGA Tour, but his return to Europe has not gone well. He finished T51 at the BMW PGA Championship and then missed the third-round cut at the Alfred Dunhill Links Championship. He shot 72-72 in Madrid to finish at two over, missing the weekend by a single shot.
Jayden Schaper (+2)
After a stunning start to the season, Jayden Schaper has cooled off. The South African won back-to-back tournaments at the Alfred Dunhill Championship and the Mauritius Open, but he has missed his second cut in a row and third in four starts. A T36 at Wentworth has been his only recent bright spot. He entered the week seventh in the Race To Dubai, and after rounds of 73 and 71, he also missed the weekend.
Bubba Watson (+3)
Bubba Watson made his debut in the tournament, but it did not go as planned. He opened with a four-over 75 on Thursday, which left him with an uphill battle. The two-time Masters champion shot a one-under 70 on Friday, but he was still a couple of shots short of the cut. He also missed the cut the previous week at the Dunhill Links.
Tom McKibbin (+3)
Tom McKibbin had found good form with a T6 at the British Masters and a T5 at the Irish Open in consecutive weeks. That form has now deserted him. The Northern Irishman has missed the cut in his last two events, including a missed weekend at Wentworth.
Nicolai Hojgaard (+4)
A hole-in-one on Friday could not save Nicolai Hojgaard, whose poor run continued. It was his fourth consecutive missed cut on the DP World Tour. He was wayward during his opening 74, and despite the ace on the third hole, he could not break par on Friday and finished four over. Hojgaard started the week 100th in the Race To Dubai standings, so he faces a major challenge to qualify for the season-ending playoffs.
Adrian Meronk (+5)
Last week’s Alfred Dunhill Links Championship winner, Adrian Meronk, struggled in Spain. He opened with a 72, but a 75 on Friday ended his tournament. It is a reminder of how difficult it is to win on the DP World Tour.
Tyrrell Hatton (+6)
Tyrrell Hatton missed the cut after an opening 76 on Thursday. He shot a much improved 72 on Friday but was nowhere near the cut mark. It is his second consecutive missed cut. With Jon Rahm making headlines by quitting LIV Golf, Hatton’s Legion XIII teammate, attention has turned to whether Hatton may also step away from LIV, though for now he is focused on the DP World Tour.
Andy Sullivan (+9)
Former Ryder Cup player Andy Sullivan was ninth in the Race To Dubai heading into Spain, despite withdrawing from the French Open on his previous start. He made a poor start on his return, opening with a 78. His 73 on Friday offered some improvement, but it was not enough to make the weekend.
